Have a Question? Ask Us!
My work permit expired over a month ago - can I still apply for an extension?
If your permit expired within the last 90 days, you may still apply to restore your temporary status. You must also apply for a work permit, and you will have to pay the fees for both services. You should include a new Labour Market Opinion and employment contract with your application.
You cannot work while your application is in process if your permit has expired.
As a work permit holder, will I be allowed to bring my spouse and children with me to Canada?
Yes, your spouse or common law partner and children can come with you to Canada or they may visit you in Canada, but they must meet all the requirements for temporary residents to Canada. That is, they must satisfy an officer that they will only stay in Canada temporarily and they must meet all the conditions for obtaining a temporary resident visa.
Are there any conditions on my work permit?
Yes, your work permit will specify the type of work you can do, the employer, and the duration of employment. You will not be allowed to engage in any other work for any other employers during this period.
Can I apply for permanent residence when my work permit expires?
Yes, if you meet the requirements of at least one category for permanent residence you will be eligible to apply for permanent residence during or at the end of your authorized work permit.
I've been offered a job by a Canadian employer; now how do I obtain a work permit?
Before applying for a work permit, your employer must have the job offer validated by
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada
. If the offer is validated, your employer will receive a positive Labour Market Opinion (LMO) with which you apply for a work permit at the visa office in your country.
How do I find out about jobs in Canada?
You can research the job market and search for employment opportunities in Canada through two websites hosted by the Canadian government:
Labour Market Information
and the
Job Bank
.
